Spyro A Realm Beyond is not a remake of an earlier game featuring Spyro. Instead, it is a brand-new adventure in which the purple dragon apparently finds himself stranded in “an otherworldly realm” and tries to find a way home while fighting an invading force called Scavs. The game will be released in spring 2027 for Xbox (on Game Pass), PlayStation 5, PC and Switch 2. In this article, we share what we have discovered about this new adventure starring the most beloved little purple dragon of the 1990s.
Spyro A Realm Beyond will arrive in 2027
Spyro the Dragon is one of the longest-running 3D action platformers from the 1990s and is now returning for a new adventure. Announced during the 2026 Xbox Games Showcase, Spyro: A Realm Beyond will see the brave purple dragon star in a new game developed by Toys For Bob. This is the creative team behind Spyro: Reignited Trilogy, which remastered the originals, and Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time.
Although the trailer offered only a brief glimpse of the game, it hints at a major expansion of the classic gameplay. As for what we can expect from A Realm Beyond, the trailer description reveals that Spyro finds himself stranded (presumably in an otherworldly realm), but soon faces “a fierce invading force known as the Scav”. It is described as “Spyro’s boldest evolution”, which sounds very promising.
Rumours of a new Spyro game have been circulating for some time. In 2024, there were rumours that Toys for Bob had signed an agreement with Microsoft shortly after splitting from Activision. It did not take long for these rumours to be confirmed: a couple of months later, Toys for Bob announced that it had “partnered with Xbox to publish our next game”, which at the time was “still at a very early stage of development”.

Fly like a real dragon
Spyro A Realm Beyond lets everyone’s favourite dragon fly freely, representing “such a significant addition” that the developers have “built an entire world around this promise”.
In a recent interview with Xbox, the head of Toys for Bob, Paul Yan, seemed to suggest this, first acknowledging that A Realm Beyond is just what was needed for a trip down memory lane.
Admitting that it will be as colourful and whimsical as its predecessors, he says: “In Spyro: A Realm Beyond, the sense of discovery is absolutely fundamental to this new adventure”. All this “sense of discovery” that the speaker talks about is made even more special by one exceptional fact. In A Realm Beyond, playing as Spyro, you can fly freely through the skies. Yes, freely, and this is a major benefit for developers and fans alike.

Interesting facts about Spyro A Realm Beyond
Actor Tom Kenny (best known for voicing SpongeBob SquarePants) will reprise the role of the leading dragon, having voiced the character in Ripto’s Rage and Year of the Dragon, as well as Toys for Bob’s 2018 Reignited Trilogy . The confident, slightly arrogant personality that defined Spyro in the original trilogy will probably undergo some changes in A Realm Beyond. As a new, mysterious antagonist emerges in a new realm, a more mature and headstrong Spyro will be there to confront them.
Associate creative director Lou Studdert can only hint that the hero is entering adolescence: “You know, dragons age differently from people”, he laughs. “You may have noticed a few small adjustments that reflect the fact that Spyro really is maturing. You can see it in his crest, and you can see that his wings have become noticeably larger. There is more to come in the story!”
With Spyro: A Realm Beyond due in 2027, it is too early to go into detail. What Toys for Bob is willing to discuss is one of the reasons behind Spyro’s increased wingspan: “When we realised we wanted him to fly, those little wings were not going to be enough”, says Studdert.
