Final Fantasy VII Revelation: the final role-playing game in the series will conclude Cloud’s journey in 2027. Following its major unveiling during Summer Game Fest Live 2026 in June, we got to see more of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation during the Gamescom 2026 programme. Director Naoki Hamaguchi took to the stage to show us the upcoming RPG in action. Square Enix had also previously released further details about the final instalment in the series, which will pick up exactly where we left off in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation: what we know
The release of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is currently expected in spring 2027. Joining the growing number of RPGs arriving in 2027, Revelation is due out next spring. Although an official release date has not yet been announced, spring generally runs from March to May. We therefore expect the game to arrive during that period.
The platforms for Final Fantasy 7 Revelation have already been revealed. The RPG will launch simultaneously on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X and Switch 2 in 2027.
Hamaguchi confirmed the big news that the saga’s third instalment will launch on all platforms. This marks a change from Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, both of which initially launched as timed PS5 exclusives before coming to Xbox Series X and Switch 2.

The story
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will continue the story of Cloud and his companions after the events of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. This time, the cast will be racing against time to stop their long-standing antagonist Sephiroth (who is said to be on the verge of achieving godhood) and a meteorite threatening to destroy the world. As Cloud says in the official reveal trailer, “put simply, the world is in trouble, and it has been for a while”, with fellow party member Barret declaring that the group will give Sephiroth “the lesson of a lifetime”.
During Summer Game Fest Live 2026, Hamaguchi said that the third part of the saga, entitled “Resolve”, would be the “central theme”. Cloud and his companions will face their own destiny, during which they will have to “find the strength to march towards the final battle”. It sounds as though we can prepare for an “epic conclusion”, with a major final showdown in store. It has also been confirmed that Revelation’s story will change according to the player’s choices, although we can expect a “single ending”.

More about Final Fantasy VII Revelation
Interestingly, it is also said that characters from spin-offs such as Advent Children, Dirge of Cerberus and Crisis Core could appear in Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. This information comes from director Hamaguchi, who explained during a question-and-answer event:
“This Final Fantasy 7 Remake series is not simply a recreation of the original work. Rather, our aim is to create a single, new Final Fantasy 7 that incorporates the settings and concepts of all the previous spin-off titles.”
A database listing also suggests that we could see DLC in the form of story expansions in the future.
Let’s talk gameplay
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is a story-driven, single-player RPG set in a vast, “boundless” open world. That description comes directly from the official press release, which emphasises that the entire planet will be explorable, both on land and in the skies.
That’s right: just as in the original adventure, we will be able to take to the skies aboard a modernised version of the classic airship Highwind. This promises to expand the game world even further, with a map “much larger” than Rebirth’s. The party will now be able to parachute down anywhere and move “seamlessly” from the air to the ground.
In the reveal trailer, we see how this will let us choose where to go and in what order to help others on our mission to save the day. With the full party assembled, we also got to see some combat scenes featuring the new playable characters Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind. The pair will join Tifa, Barret, Yuffie, Red XIII and Cait Sith to fight alongside Cloud.
The hybrid combat system is returning, combining real-time action with a tactical mode that can be activated to offer a range of new spells and abilities in the special commands menu. Synergy attacks, first introduced in Rebirth, can be activated again, allowing you to unleash powerful attacks in sync with your companions. The classic selection of Summonswill also return, capable of dealing heavy damage and turning the tide of battle when called upon.
