Pirate video games: which are the best?

Videogames sui pirati

Pirate video games: anyone who, like me, loves the golden age of piracy unfortunately knows that pirate games are few and far between. One of the most beloved, currently being rediscovered, is certainly Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. Raids, naval battles, searching for treasure and becoming the terror of the seven seas: ever since I first watched The Goonies as a little girl, the world of pirates has fascinated me. The legend of One-Eyed Willy intrigued me so much that I devoured every pirate book in the library. Let’s look at the pirate games that made history.

There are not many pirate games, but some titles are worth playing.

Pirate video games: which are the best?

There is a genuine thrill in raising the Jolly Roger, feeling the wind fill your digital sails and charting a course into unexplored waters. The pirate fantasy has always been a perfect match for video games, naturally blending exploration, naval combat and treasure hunting. With the launch of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, pirate fever has returned with a vengeance.

First comes the game that set the modern standard for adventures on the high seas, now renewed and updated as Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. Its story follows Edward Kenway, a bold, charismatic Welsh privateer turned pirate during the Golden Age of Piracy. Driven by wealth and prestige, Edward accidentally becomes entangled in the ancient secret war between Assassins and Templars. His journey is one of personal growth, gradually learning that life offers more than gold and personal glory while interacting with historical figures such as Blackbeard, Stede Bonnet and Anne Bonny.

The core gameplay alternates between traditional land-based stealth and extensive naval combat. As captain of the Jackdaw, you sail a vast Caribbean open world, facing enemy galleons, overcoming dynamic storms and hunting marine wildlife. The game excels particularly in naval combat and exploration. Upgrading your ship is satisfying, and moving from open-water sailing to climbing ropes to board an enemy vessel is seamless and exciting. The world feels alive, full of unexplored islands, underwater wrecks and hidden secrets.

Pirate-life management games have always fascinated me; this is one of my favourites alongside Port Royale.

Two entertaining games

Lego Pirates of the Caribbean is great fun! Taking the beloved film saga and adding classic Lego charm, this adventure offers straightforward cooperative entertainment. It perfectly captures the adventurous spirit while remaining accessible to players of all ages seeking lighthearted treasure hunting.

Risen 2 Dark Waters: this action RPG fully embraces the gritty, hazy reality of pirate life. Although imperfect in places, its commitment to the pirate aesthetic and compelling world design make it memorable for fans of classic role-playing games.

Tropico 2 Pirate Cove and other titles worth playing

Moving away from traditional city building towards a pirate management simulation, Tropico 2 Pirate Cove asks you to build a thriving pirate utopia. You must manage prisoners, ensure a steady supply of rum and keep your captains happy enough to continue plundering the seas.

Pillars of Eternity II Deadfire is a deep isometric RPG in which you command your ship across a vast archipelago. Rich storytelling and complex faction politics elevate the pirate setting far beyond standard clichés, giving your choices real weight.

Sid Meyer’s Pirates is a landmark in the genre. This simulation lets you trade, fight, dance and duel your way to fame. Its open structure gives you the freedom to forge your own unique pirate legacy however you see fit.

Pirate video games: sandbox adventures

Sea of Thieves is the ultimate cooperative pirate sandbox. Whether fighting a Kraken, digging up cursed treasure or simply playing instruments with your crew as your ship slowly sinks, it creates chaotic, unscripted moments unlike any other game on the market.
