Wo Long 2 Wings of Ember arrives in 2027

·

Wo Long 2 Wings of Ember

Wo Long 2 Wings of Ember is currently in development and will be released in early 2027. It is an action RPG set in the dark era of the Three Kingdoms and a sequel to the 2023 dark-fantasy action role-playing game Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. The game will launch in early 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. It takes place in an alternative dark-fantasy version of the late Eastern Han period in China. It follows an unnamed champion empowered by the phoenix who fights across demon-infested battlefields.

Wo Long 2 Wings of Ember: what we know

Here is an overview of the game, provided by Koei Tecmo:

Set during the late Eastern Han dynasty, when warlords competed for supremacy and the heroes of the Three Kingdoms emerged, a phoenix rises from the ashes of war as an unnamed champion fights across vast battlefields, facing powerful enemies and fearsome monsters.

In this eagerly awaited sequel to Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, which has surpassed 5 million players worldwide, players must master evolved Chinese martial arts and conquer the battlefields of the Three Kingdoms overrun by monstrous demons, alongside legendary heroes who left their mark on history. To celebrate the announcement, the first game, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, is available again through Game Pass for Xbox Series, Xbox One and PC.

More interesting details

Wo Long 2 Wings of Ember will be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one. It is also included in Xbox Play Anywhere, so you can play it on PC too. We do not yet know the pricing details, but we can infer that it will cost between $59.99 and $69.99.

We do not yet have confirmation on whether it is advisable to play the first Wo Long before Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember. It is described as a sequel, so it will probably continue the first title’s story and setting. The announcement came alongside a new trailer showing cinematic sequences and a substantial amount of gameplay. It features some truly spectacular sword fighting as well as more fantastical elements.

The first Wo Long was an excellent game from Team Ninja, released in 2023, which attracted a following enthusiastic about its distinctive style of hardcore melee combat. A sequel is therefore a welcome surprise in an already packed catalogue.

What do we know about the gameplay of Wo Long 2 Wings of Ember?

Very little; we really know very little. The development team stated: “The new game features an evolved style of Chinese martial arts that integrates offensive and defensive combat, and you will be able to learn more about what is new in the coming months.”

The trailer showed large-scale battles absent from the original game, alongside the action-packed combat for which Team Ninja is famous.

Wo Long Fallen Dynasty: we recommend playing it before Wings of Ember

Team Ninja’s latest action game is set in the era of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, where real battles collide with giant multi-tentacled horses and pumped-up tigers. You play an unnamed hero thrust into a power struggle that seemingly can only be resolved by learning the parry windows of dozens of terrifying creatures.

In this respect, Wo Long is less like a Souls game and more like Sekiro. Unlike From Software’s more frenetic game, however, Wo Long offers a much more forgiving parry window, allowing masochists and non-masochists alike to enjoy the constant interplay of parrying, dodging and blocking that defines its encounters.

The game is at its best when you focus on parrying. One-on-one duels test timing and rhythm, letting you analyse your opponent’s tactics and attack only when you know their next move before they even make it. Unfortunately, the game seems all too eager to pull you away from these one-on-one duels whenever it has the chance.
